Date :February 4, 2020 By :Laura Bill

There is no denying that most of the unhealthy foods like burgers, pizza, fries are simply finger-licking delicious. However, the portion of the healthy nutrients is almost negligent compared to the harmful ones.

On average healthy adults consuming 2000 calories, each day must aim for 45 to 65 percent of their calories to come from carbohydrates. Preferably unrefined, and taking account of all the sugar you consume when calculating carbs quantity. It is essential to focus not only on bread and pasta. You should also aim for not more than 66 grams of fat, which is combined with 20 grams of saturated fat. The last most popular nutrient in an unhealthy food list is sodium. It must be not more than 2400 milligrams every day. There are multiple other nutrients, but these remain the highlight because of the consequences they bring when consumed in access.

Factors affecting the healthiness of the food:

It is widespread knowledge that everyone must eat healthy food, but what makes food healthy or unhealthy? Here is a specific factor that defines the food being healthy or unhealthy.

The time factor of the food is crucial, and the more time spent after cooking, extracting, or plucking the food, the unhealthier it becomes. It is always best to consume food as quickly as possible after it is ready. Furthermore, likewise, the food should be cooked only when it has to be consumed. Cooking food in advance to be consumed later is highly not recommended. The same is the case with fruits; fruits should be consumed as quickly as possible after being plucked from trees or plants. Fresh fruits have the best nutrients and are the healthiest.

Oil content

The more fat the food contains, the unhealthier it becomes. Although our body requires fat content, excess of it can be very damaging to our health, especially to the heart. The number of people having heart diseases, heart attacks, increased cholesterol, and abnormal blood pressures is increasing day by day, and one of the primary reasons for this is the oil content in people’s foods.

Salt content

Excessive salty foods can give rise to diseases such as high blood pressure and increased risk of heart attacks. The salt content in South Asian foods is excessively high, and that is extremely dangerous for the long-term health of people.

Sugar content

Excessive sugar intake can give rise to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, inflammation, skin aging, and so on. Therefore, sugary foods can pose a potential threat to a person’s health, and the intake must be limited.

Here, we learn that excess of anything can be very damaging to your health, no matter how important that thing is for your health.

The 10 Unhealthiest Foods:

1.   Sugary and Carbonated Drinks:

Carbonated drinks, fruit juices, or other sugary drinks are among the most consumed food products worldwide. In reality, these are nothing but sugary calorie bombs that have contributed to the increasing obesity epidemic in every country. These drinks are one of the most popular sources of various types of cancers, premature aging, hormone imbalance, diabetics, heart problems, excess weight gain, tooth decay, etc.

The drinks contain high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, preservatives, and other sketchy ingredients. Some of these drinks also have brominated vegetable oil and plastic flame retardant, which is linked to memory loss, nervous disorders, and skin problems. And, people trusting diet drinks should be even more cautious. These drinks have artificial sweeteners, which are even more hazardous for health.

2.   Breads (primarily white bread):

Breads are generally considered as essential and healthy food for kids and adults. In one way or another, it is part of every meal consumed. However, there is a very small proportion of breads which are beneficial for health. As most of the bread (mainly white) is produced by refined flour. Refined flour refers to refining all the good nutrients out of the flour. While refining wheat, most of the fiber content is removed along with the essential nutrients which lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar.

Choosing any bread other than whole-grain bread includes more harmful properties than the benefits. Therefore, make sure to utilize home-made, freshly baked whole-grain bread instead of pre-packed refined flour breads.

3.   Cereals for breakfast:

Due to a shortage of time, most people start their day with a bowl of cereal. But, in most cases, these cereals contain many harmful ingredients.

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, as whatever consumed at this time has a significant impact on your body. The preservatives, artificial chemicals, dyes, food colors, high amounts of sugar or salt are extraordinarily harmful and impact the consumer’s health instantly. There have been several studies on the impact of cereals on human health, especially the cereals for children contain more sodium, carbohydrates, sugar, and calories, which are extremely hazardous to children and impact their growth significantly.

4.   French Fries and Potato Chips:

Indeed, we cannot say the same things about French fries and potato chips.

However, in different ways, these have a huge and adverse impact on consumer’s health. Both of these are very high in calories and have all the right nutrients removed, which, when consumed even in small quantity leads to weight gain, obesity, heart problems, cholesterol, and several other problems.

As for potato chips, they have added flavors and spices which are made from artificial additives, preservatives, and chemicals. They include chemicals which are not even considered edible because of their adverse effects. They contain large amounts of acrylamides that are carcinogenic substances which form when potatoes are fried, baked, or roasted.

Therefore, stay as far away as possible from your favorite French fries and potato snacks.

5.   Low-fat and low-carb products:

Milk, yogurt, and several other natural products are incredibly healthy and essential for humans. However, adjusting their nutrients to make them ‘low-fat’ or ‘low-carb’ is merely useless and harmful.

For adjusting, they add loads of fat, sugar, flavor, and what not which instead of making the product healthy make it harmful for one’s health. Let’s take an example of low-fat yogurts: most yogurts do not provide probiotic bacteria as thought generally. They are usually pasteurized, which kills most of the useful bacteria in yogurt. Such changes make the low-fat and low-carb products one of the unhealthiest foods on earth.

6.   Processed meat:

According to multiple researchers and findings, eating processed meat will lead to early deaths.

Processed meat covers a huge part of proteins utilized daily by almost everyone. It includes ham, hot dogs, sausage, salami, bologna, and all other varieties of proteins available in a ready-to-eat form. It has been found that it actively increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases along with cancer and a few other diseases. In fact, as per a study done by Harvard stated that people who consume 50 grams of processed meat, which is equivalent to 1 hot dog, have a 42% more chance of heart diseases and 20% more chance of type 2 diabetes.

There is no comparison between processed and unprocessed meat when it comes to saturated fat and cholesterol, processed meats that contain a lot more sodium (almost four times) along 50% more nitrate preservatives.

7.   Processed cheese:

Cheese is one of the most popular healthy ingredients which comes with limitless benefits. It is loaded with nutrients, taste, and all the good things you can think of. As per the researches, a single slice of cheese contains all the nutrients as a glass of milk.

But, the case with processed cheese is quite different. The processed cheese products have nothing like regular cheese. They are manufactured mostly with filler ingredients, which are engineered to have cheese-like appearance and texture. These products provide great taste and a cheesy texture to your meals or when consumed in raw form but are incredibly unhealthy. It is advisable to use homemade cheese, or if that is not possible, make sure to read labels to confirm that your cheese at least contains dairy products and least artificial ingredients.

8.   Products which include sugar or other refined grains:

The canned fruits, beans, vegetables, soups, and other canned materials mostly include a high quantity of sugar, salt, refined grains, and artificial trans fats. Mostly, the ready to eat meals, and these shelf-friendly foods contain these refined grains. Although the limited amount of these grains is essential for health.

The method utilized to add these refined grains and the quantity present is much more than the required and, therefore, causes problems instead of benefit. In our modern diet, these ingredients have become part of our daily diet. Thus, the importance and necessity of reading labels cannot be overstated. This also applies to meals labeled ‘healthy.’

9.   Frozen Meals:

Most of the processed meat and cheese are part of frozen meals. However, frozen meals include fruits, vegetables, doughs, and much more. They are prepared to provide convenience and unmatchable taste. To do so, they add preservatives, chemicals, dry the natural products, or ferment them. This removes the actual nutrients and benefits while restoring the taste only.

Even the simply sliced vegetables are not in their pure form and are combined with multiple chemicals to retain their shape and color only. Therefore, even the simplest of the frozen meals are incredibly unhealthy for you.

10.   Shelf-stable condiments:

Shelf-stable condiments no doubt make life a lot easier. But the condiments which are kept at room temperature in single-serving packets or tubes of dips, self-serve pumps of your favorite sauce, bottles of mayonnaise or ketchup and other seasonings and salad dressings. You can find these everywhere from your house’s dining table to all the eateries or cafes. Those little pre-packaged creamers for your tea and coffee.

These foods can’t be refrigerated because they are dried or fermented to stay shelf-stable. There are a lot of preservatives, additives like food coloring, salt, sweeteners, bad fats like trans fats and several other chemical agents which lead to multiple problems. To make it shelf-friendly, the good fats and nutrients are stripped out.

Importance of healthy food in our lives:

Healthy food is of utmost importance in our lives as our diet defines where we will be standing physically, mentally, and emotionally in times to come. Healthy eating is exceptionally compulsory to keep up the excellent shape of a human being. Exercising, working out, and spending extended hours in the gym will not help unless you are accompanying all this with healthy eating. An athlete also needs to take strict care of their diet along with the necessary training required for their career.

Additionally, healthy food is the firm wall that stands between a person and the chances of catching a disease caused by an unhealthy diet. Such diseases can include but are not limited to, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol, abnormal blood pressure, and so on. Therefore, even if you are not fat or obese, you still need to look after your diet and not eat oily and junk foods to protect yourself from such diseases.

It is very rightly said that ‘health is wealth,’ therefore, healthy food allows you to stay healthy, focused on your work and consequently, wealthy. Apart from the physical implications, healthy food is also essential for your mental health and protects you against depression, hypertension, and anxiety.

To maintain food health and enjoy every moment of life fully, it is vital to take of yourself. There are multiple things that you can add in your life to ensure this; however, the consumed food remains the first point on the list. The consumed food defines the functioning of your body. Therefore, if you take supplements or exercise a lot, then all your efforts are in vain if you don’t take care of your diet. Make sure to find out what every food comprises and consume the ideal quantity of it to avail maximum benefit.

Taking care of your diet will allow you to live a carefree, enjoyable life as you won’t be tied to medicines or medical expenses and will be able to spend you earning as per your wish and enjoy your life to the fullest.
